ABOUT PLAY THERAPY...

'Enter into children's play and you will find the place where their minds, hearts and souls meet.'
- Virginia Axline

Play therapy is a form of therapy designed to help children with a range of issues – from regulating their emotions and building emotional literacy to healing trauma.
Using the child’s natural language of play encourages them to explore their thoughts and feelings. allowing children to process their own emotions and articulate problems without the need for words.

Through play, children learn coping mechanisms and how to redirect inappropriate behaviours. They will build emotional literacy and emotional logic and can explore potentially triggering scenarios and situations in an environment that is comfortable for them, without fear of judgement. Play therapy encourages the use of language and may improve fine and gross motor skills.

Play therapy sessions are a private and confidential space for children to communicate their feelings and emotions. Play therapy helps children find healthier ways of communicating, develop relationships, increase resilience and facilitates emotional wellbeing.

ABOUT ME

Hello, I'm Cathy - a therapeutic play practitioner based in Market Drayton, Shropshire.

I am a PTUK and APAC trained therapist, registered with the Professional Standards Authority.

I am passionate about therapeutic play and the benefits it provides for children.

It's much more than 'just playtime' - based in neuroscience, therapeutic play and play therapy allow children to communicate in their own natural language, encouraged by a holistic toolkit used by the therapist.

I use a range of different tools during sessions, including toys, art, clay, sand, musical instruments and creative visualization.

I studied to achieve a degree in Education, and then a post graduate certificate in Psychology. I have a post graduate certificate in Therapeutic Play and, during lockdown, I achieved a level 4 qualification in Counselling Children and Adolescents.

I currently practice within schools and other organizations and do currently have some limited availability for new clients.

If you feel that your child could benefit from therapeutic play, or you are unsure, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

I am currently taking referrals from schools, doctors, parents and other organizations. If you wish to discuss making a referral, please contact me via email or through my facebook page and we can arrange a phonecall.

MY SERVICES

'You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.'
- Plato.

Railroad Set

1:1 PLAY THERAPY SESSION

1:1 Play Therapy Sessions, providing a confidential space for children to express themselves and learn to understand their own feelings and thoughts.
A minimum of 12 sessions will be required, with a minimum of two meetings with the child's class teacher and two meetings with the child's parent.
A end of therapy report will be provided and I will also observe the child within their classroom setting for 10-15 minutes before beginning therapy - in order to gain some understanding of the child and how they present.

GROUP THERAPY SESSIONS

Group play therapy sessions are designed to utilize play as the natural language of children, whilst building bonds and learning skills with peers. This is overseen by the therapist, and in a consistent and safe environment.
Sessions are carefully planned to the children's needs and are designed to challenge children and build their emotional skills, whilst still feeling safe and in a therapeutic environment.

A minimum of 8 sessions will be required, with a group maximum of 4 children.

These sessions include an end of therapy report for each child and an observation before beginning therapy.

Drama Class

DRAMA WORKSHOPS.

I also offer drama workshops. I have over ten years experience working with children through drama, and as a Youth Drama Practitioner.

Workshops can be half day or full day workshops and tailored to compliment learning.

The workshops can be themed around a topic the school requests - for example, emotions, a particular book, a topic that the class is studying or an upcoming celebration e.g, Christmas. No topic is too bizarre!

Drama, theatre and roleplay is a really important activity for children and can be a therapy in itself. It allows them an escape from reality and also a character in which they can speak through. The chance to act out real life scenarios can be really cathartic for children and provide them with life experiences that they have not yet had a chance to explore.
